The Development and Principals of Editing

This scene is where (Django) Jamie foxx shoots up a slave owner home after him and companion (Christoph Waltz) Dr. King Schultz get sold out by (Samuel L Jackson) Stephen and Django ends up shooting up (Leonardo DiCaprio) Calvin Candie home as he was a slave owner.

Django was shot in the anamorphic format with 35 mm film and I presume edited digitally this scene itself has a lot of edits in it this is one of the reasons why I chose to analyse it.
The scene starts off with a medium shot of Schultz and swaps to Calvin with another medium shot, Then at 0:09 it then goes back to Schultz with a long shot as you are able to see his entire body. At 0:13 you are able to see that there is an over the shoulder shot where the camera is looking over Schultz shoulder and is looking at Calvin. At 0:14 it goes from a medium shot to a close up of a gun that was up Schultz Sleeve. As soon as you see this you then see a close up of Calvin's chest where he was shot then pans up to his face then slowly goes out to a long shot as he falls back after he realizes what happened. At 0:28 it goes to a medium shot of Stephen then zooms in to a close up of his face when he notices that Calvin was shot. Then goes to a ground shot looking up to Schultz and Stephen , As Stephen runs to Calvin we get a close up of Django's face at 0:35 this is when he realizes what Schultz has done. It then does multiple close ups one ground up shot then a medium shot as Schultz is being shot. At 0:44 we get a brief close up of Schultz's feet as he gets shot and the flew across the room and a long shot. We then get a close up of Stephen holding Calvin's dead body. At 0:52 It cuts to one of the slavers that shot Schultz being a medium shot which then cuts to a close up with Django looking down at something off screen then it zooms out to a medium shot which shows us that he is grabbing a gun to start shooting people himself. The camera pans with one of the slavers as he runs from Django. Then at 0:58 it has a close up to one of the slaves that are in the room screaming as guns are being shot off. At 1:00 we get a medium shot of a slaver being shot as he opens the doors to escape we then get a long shot of the room as Django jumps out of the room shooting the other slaver as he does it. At 1:12 it goes to an over the shoulder shot of Django being shot at from a balcony to a close up of Django grabbing a gun to shoot the slaver and then pans up to Django when he fires the gun then cuts to the slaver being shot. at 1:17 a bunch of slavers walk into the room ready to open fire on. Then it swaps to a medium shot of Django as he sprays down the slavers with his gun he reached for before. It then cuts to Django in cover and then cuts to all of the people he shot down this is about 1:22 when all of that happens.

In this clip all of the way it made it transitions were just normal cuts to keep the scene fast as it is a shoot out scene this way people won't get bored of watching it. Like there could of been a screen wipe or a fade when Calvin dies and Stephen runs over. Cuts help to keep pace rather than having a second meaning like other transitions:

A dissolve shot is when the clip fades into another these don't really drag on as the audience needs to stay entertained and interested  in the movie. Dissolves can be used to show a passage of time passing or to transfer into a dream sequence.

A wipe is where the screen would wipe to black or to another scene this can happen a lot in a POV movie they can make it look the person is blinking. A common reason to use a wipe is to indicate 'meanwhile'. This is used a lot in Star Wars when the narrative jumps between what is happening to lots of different characters at the same time.

A fade to black is a way to show a film has finished you can also use fade to white for this.

Cutaway is a technique that is used to keep the action going and this helps to show all of the action that is happening in the scene but it can be used to avoid jump cuts. Cutaways can be inserted into scenes to create an emotion, for example, if there is a cutaway during a scene to a bird or someone smiling, the audience feel safe and calm but if it cuts to a weapon or something scary, the audience feel threatened. A jump cut is when it appears frames are missing and the footage jumps slightly from one shot to another. this is disorientating to the audience and can be confusing.

Continuity is very important to maintain in media as if you walk down a road on the left you must continue to film from that angle over wise it would look like the person has turned around even though they haven't. If you don't do this you can easily confuse the audience.

The 180 degree rule ensures that each person occupies a consistent area of a frame, this would help the audience understand the layout of the scene. This does also help with the continuity and prevent errors.

Match cut on action this is a fundamental element of the continuity system that is in place. It is when you film the action in one shot then end it in the other.

Eyeline match this is where we see a shot of someone looking at someone or something then the next shot is where the camera is looking at the point of interest. This can be in either POV or other types of shots.

Shot reverse-shot this is for when filming between two people that are in conversation and with this you don't need to have both in shot at the same time. This is where you swap the camera between people but you need to keep to the 180 degree rule.

Manipulating diegetic time and space is where the editor messes with the time of the movie so you can make it look like one scene takes place over a day or a week or even month or two.

Identification with the protagonist: With this you can tell that Django is the main protagonist as he is in the entire clip so he has most of the screen time. Also he has a lot of medium shots and close ups of what he is doing.
